Abstract： Prototype criticism is an important form of literary criticism, which aims to explore the inner likeliness and symbolism of the literary works. ‘Iceberg principle’ is Hemingway’s prominent writing technique, whose concise writing style offers a vast room to interpret for the following researchers, and The Old Man and the Sea embodies this style thoroughly. The theory of prototype criticism offers a good way to analyze the biblical prototype and symbolism of The Old Man and the Sea and to reveal the profound symbolic meanings of the iceberg hidden below the water. Exploring the symbolic meaning of the literary works in the light of the theory of prototype criticism is helpful for deepening people’s cognition of literary works and promoting the development of the literary criticism.
